PEINTURE BOUDDHIQUE DE GUAN YIN (AVALOKITSHVARA DE LA LUNE D - Lot 235
VERY FINE BUDDHIST PAINTING OF GUAN YIN China, 18th century Ink, gold and pigments on silk Mounted in hanging scroll Provenance : Ex American Collection The bodhisattva of infinite compassion and wisdom is here shown as the Water-Moon Avalokiteshvara portraying two of the deity's standard attributes: the image of the Buddha Amitabha in the crown and the willow branch symbolizing healing displayed in a kundika (ritual water vessel). The full moon usually visible at the top of the painting is not shown here. Surrounded by a sea of swirling waves, Avalokiteshvara sits on a rocky outcrop carried by four horned demon-attendants. This rock represents his island abode of Mount Potalaka. Floating on a lotus petal, the boy Sudhana who, according to scripture, visits Mount Potalaka and the homes of fifty-three
