JOINVILLE. - Lot 164
JOINVILLE.
Memoirs of Messire Jean, sire de Jonville [sic], Seneschal de Champagne. Eyewitness to the life of Saint Louis, forty-fourth King of France. With the genealogy of the House of Bourbon...
A Paris, chez Jacques Cottin, 1666, in-12 bound in full shagreened calf, ornate smooth spine, title page, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, marbled edges.
A fine copy.
Rare edition of Joinville's famous memoirs. It includes, for the first time, a short genealogy of the Bourbons, inserted in the liminaries, and an index (Saffroy, 10959).
The first edition of these hagiographic memoirs about Louis IX, composed around 1308, was given in Poitiers in 1547 by Enguilbert de Marnef, according to an "inexact" manuscript. This same text was used again for the present edition (Brunet III 557).
