This fragment of the Last Supper shows only eight of the twelve apostles gathered around Christ at the Last Supper table.
Blasco de Grañen, documented in Saragossa from 1422 to 1459, remains the most important figure of the late international Gothic period in this region. Extremely popular, Blasco de Grañen (ex Master of Lanaja) was a prolific artist, producing numerous works with the help of a flourishing workshop.
Like Blasco de Grañen in the Last Supper from the altarpiece of San Salvador de Ejea de los Caballeros (diocese of Saragossa), painted in the second third of the 15th century, the painter of our panel places the event in a vaulted architectural setting, with the apostles seated on a bench, seen from behind. But unlike Blasco de Grañen, who depicts a highly animated scene, he tempers their discussion by freezing the figures in a climate of resignation.
By using large, simplified strokes on his figures, who are dressed in broad, schematized drapery, and whose bulging eyes and heavy eyelids accentuate the harshness of their expression, the artist gives them a rustic, plebeian character, suggesting that this work, a fragment of a multi-panel altarpiece, would have adorned the altar of a simple rural Aragonese church in the second half of the 15th century.
