Deep Breath 2023

Michele Landel embroiders photographs on stiff old sheets like those that clutter the creaking wardrobes of family homes. Faces, peonies, flasks... At first glance, nothing really nasty. Up close, however, flowers fade and eyes recede, colors fade and shapes flee, visibly threatened, if not already gone. Everywhere, mystery hovers and danger prowls, like the thread, chosen tone-on-tone from an extinguished palette. Impossible to follow, it pierces the image in all directions, at once scarring and suturing, giving its anonymous silhouettes the air of voodoo dolls. Michel Landel deliberately employs the means at hand: iron and butcher's paper are used to transfer portraits and still lifes onto fabric, soon to be stitched on with a sewing machine, the indestructible instrument of progress that once mechanized an ancestral gesture, a woman's gesture, a home fairy's gesture. Her needlework on bed linen evokes the monotonous languor of domestic life, the weary, muted hum of a prolonged stay within four walls. House arrest, then, but also the war of independence or the raid of reminiscences are all fundamental questions posed on the surface, between a hole and a stain. Textiles and politics are intertwined in these patchworks inspired by the liberated writings of Virginia Woolf and Mary Oliver. For they constantly reiterate the prevented history of the second sex.
