David TENIERS the Younger (1610-1690) - Lot 261
David TENIERS the Younger (1610-1690) The Holy Family Oil on copper (small chips on outer edges) edges) On verso, two red wax stamps, one for a collection and the other mentioning "Valenciennes JB Foucart 1898". Two antique labels mentioning David Teniers le Jeune 22.8 x 16.9 cm Signed with the monogram "D.T" lower left in the rock Our copper was probably part of a group of works commissioned by Archduke Leopold of Austria (1614-1662), Governor of the Netherlands from 1646 to 1656. He built up one of the most important collections of paintings of his time in Brussels, and David Teniers became its curator in 1651. Painter, draughtsman and engraver, David Teniers II or Le Jeune was one of the finest artists of his dynasty. With the Teniers family, attention was paid to the meticulous rendering of details that lend a preciousness to each of their works, whether on panel, canvas or, as here, copper. David Teniers II is best known for his genre scenes, tavern interiors and other satires of human behavior. He also devoted himself to depicting religious subjects, such as this delicate image of the Virgin and Child and Saint Anne holding the Bible on one side and a bunch of grapes on the other, the ultimate Christian symbol.
