Malik SIDIBE (1936-2016) Look at me with my cap and my sunglasses Silver bromide print, titled, dated and signed Paper : 30x40cm, Malick Sidibé is, with Seydou Keïta, one of the great names of African photography, and like him, will be recognized late in Europe. Born into a Fulani family in 1936 in southern Mali, he quickly became interested in photography and opened the Malick Studio in Bamako, which he ran from 1958 until his death in 2016. He became the "Eye of Bamako", renowned for his often funky, always spontaneous but perfectly framed shots. He also photographed the evenings and nights of Bamako, with an instinct and speed that the many people who passed before his lens remember. With a square medium format camera and means reduced to the essential, he manages to capture the essence of the movement and the state of mind of a whole generation. He was the first African to receive the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in 2003. He has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in 2002, a Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2007, and a World Press Photo award in 2010. The Fondation Cartier offers him a vast retrospective, Mali Twist, in 2017. Starting price: 2500€.
