Charles Christofle, 1844-1847.
A TABLE SPOON FROM THE SERVICE OF LOUIS-PHILIPPE IER, KING OF THE FRENCH, AT THE CHÂTEAU D'EU.
Engraved with the coat of arms of the last king of the French, azure with three fleurs-de-lis or with a silver label surmounted by a closed crown, on a background of tricoloured flags, with the sceptre and the hand of justice in saltire.
While this set eloquently testifies to the famous goldsmith's commission executed by Charles Christofle for the service of King Louis-Philippe at the Château d'Eu in Normandy, it is worth noting the rare presence on all the pieces of the engraved coat of arms of the King of the French on the table spoons, and the inscription EU engraved below the arms of the sovereign, indicating that this spoon was intended for the use of Louis-Philippe's personal table at the Château of Eu. His favourite family residence where he welcomed Queen Victoria of England on two occasions, sealing the First Entente Cordiale.
