Tapestry panel from the Royal Manufactures of Brussels, 17th century Belonging to a series of hangings having for subject the loves and the life of the lovers Gombault and Macée, inspired by a satirical poem of Henri Baude (born in Moulin in 1415), an allusion made in The Miser of Molière. Technical characteristics : Wool and silk Dimensions : Height : 285cm ; Width : 300cm (Good general condition, small restorations of maintenance) "Les Amours de Gombault & Macée : The meeting of Gombault & Macée This theme is part of the tradition of pastoral literature, and in particular of the pastoral novel, which was fashionable throughout the 16th century and which reached its crowning glory in France with Honoré d'Urfé's L'Astrée, in 1607. However, the series of tapestries recounting the love affairs of Gombault and Macée, generally eight panels for the complete series (here the meeting), differs in that it continues the story beyond the marriage, until Gombault's death, and gives greater prominence to the realistic elements of daily life. Moreover, the representations are especially the texts that are attached to it because sexuality is approached with lightness and sauciness. This theme was very popular in the 17th century, to the point that it is alluded to in Molière's L'Avare.
