Important censer lid - Lot 103
Important censer lid The monumental composition with a central mask classifies this work among the "theatre censers". The rectangular structure rests on an inverted lid and is supported by a chimney that disappears behind the decor. This animal-themed architecture with bird heads and feathers in a fan or in circles, serves as a showcase for the face, which is probably that of a deity to be related to the notion of fertility. The face corresponds to the classicism of Teotihuacan and is adorned with large circular loops. We find on the left fan two interlaced volutes that symbolize the sign of the wind, announcer of rain, but also the movement as the vegetation that regenerates. It is close to a censer kept at the Denver Museum but has the interest of still having the two round mica mirrors. Brown terracotta molded and assembled, with yellow and white painted decoration. Mica inlays. Teotihuacan culture, Mexico 500 - 900 A.D. H. 42 - Width 39 - Thickness 14.5 cm Provenance: - Older collection, Switzerland.
