Tripod dish with dignitary decoration - Lot 102
Tripod dish with dignitary decoration Very beautiful dish with a singular style in the treatment of the characters that we only know through three or four other examples. The central character stands out against a beige background. Sitting on a throne, he stretches out his right hand with fingers voluntarily extended to signify the importance of the gesture. A headdress made up of two locks held in a knot responds to the movement of the hands. It is adorned with black body paint for the legs and head and red for the bust, as well as dots that can evoke the jaguar's skin. The wing of this large dish is animated with three figures and a zoomorphic figure, alternating with glyphs and decorations of superimposed circles. The delicacy of the drawing makes it possible to link this dish to the "priest's workshop" referred to in the exhibition "Maya: Treasures of an Ancient Civilisation" which took place in New York in 1985. Terracotta with polychrome decoration Mayan culture, Mexico, Guatemala 500 - 900 A.D. H. 8.6 - Diam. 34 cm Provenance: - Older collection, Switzerland.
