Pierre Legrain (1889 - 1929)- Modern art binding in embossed - Lot 22
Pierre Legrain (1889 - 1929)- Modern art binding in embossed tinted leather, smooth spine, gilt title on edge - Collection of speeches by French President Raymond Poincaré (1915-1919) - Signed on the second cover - Circa 1920 H. 14 cm; L. 10 cm Pierre Legrain, a major figure in the revival of bookbinding in the XXᵉ century, broke with traditional decorations to introduce a bold, abstract, geometric aesthetic. An artist, designer, cabinetmaker and bookbinder emblematic of the Art Deco period, he was self-taught. Forced to work at an early age to support his family after the death of his father, as the eldest child he created caricatures and decors that his mentor Paul Iribe noticed and exploited. Tired of a lack of recognition, Pierre-Émile Legrain became independent. Discharged for health reasons during the war, Pierre-Émile Legrain, now known as Pierre Legrain, responds to a commission from the great couturier Jacques Doucet for the bindings of his library. After designing his own furniture, Doucet wanted a library that was in harmony with his interior: modern and completely innovative. They remained close friends until their death in 1929. Pierre Legrain created no fewer than 370 bindings for Jacques Doucet, each with an instantly recognizable style.
