Important sculpture of a Tirthankara Jain Sandstone. India, 7th - 8th century, Post-Gupta period 61.5 x 47 x 15 cm One of the twenty-four Jain saints, or Tirthankaras, is depicted naked with his torso adorned with the srivatsa, or endless knot. His hair is in a bun, with strands falling down his broad shoulders. The figure, surrounded by two attendants, sits in a meditative position on a throne supported by two lions on either side of a wheel of the Dharmachakra law. Her lotus posture, as well as this particular headdress, are generally associated with representations of Jina Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara founder of Jainism. A stele with the same iconography is preserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (inv. n°IS.12-1996). The object is accompanied by a handwritten certificate from the Asian art expert Michel Beurdeley (1911-2012), dated 1970 (the expert, on the back of a photo of the stele, identifies the piece and dates it to the Post-Gupta period). Expert CNES Alexis RENARD
