Jacques-Augustin Gandais, circa 1834 SIX... - Lot 3 - Castor Hara
Jacques-Augustin Gandais, circa 1834 SIX FLAT PLATES FROM THE FIRST GOLDEN SERVICE ORDERED BY LOUIS-PHILIPPE I, AS KING OF THE FRENCH (1830-1848). Engraved on the reverse with the initials of the sovereign, LP under royal crown. Model with ribbed edge. Silver lined metal Diameter: 25,5 cm Marks : stamp of GANDAIS (3), goldsmith and plater of King Louis-Philippe I. Little known, this goldsmith's service used in the various residences of the last French king, including the castle of Eu*, testifies by the engraving on the reverse of each piece of the figure of Louis-Philippe I under a crown, of the hesitations of the new monarch to assert himself as a sovereign but also of the heraldic choices made at the beginning of his reign which will not last. The coat of arms of King Louis-Philippe will replace his monogram on silverware, which will henceforth adorn porcelain services and books. Provenance : Louis-Philippe I (1773-1850), King of the French His daughter, Clémentine d'Orléans (1817-1907), Princess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha -then by descent. Lot visible and to be collected at the study Jacques-Augustin Gandais founded his goldsmith's workshop in Paris in 1819, specializing in the production of silver plated metal. He brought this technique from England to such a high degree of excellence and innovation that he became its leading figure. The goldsmith services he executed made, by their quality, the fame of silver plated metal in France. Gandais covered the copper of the protruding parts of his models with strips of pure silver to counteract wear, just as he made the feet and other ornaments on his pieces in solid silver. In 1834, Louis-Philippe I awarded him the patent of goldsmith and plater of the king, who also made him a knight of the Legion of Honour. The jury of the exhibition of industrial products awarded him a silver medal in 1834 and 1844, and the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry a silver and gold medal. Installed in the galleries of the Palais-Royal, Gandais also delivered his production to other courts in Europe, such as that of Queen Maria II da Gloria of Portugal.
