Technical characteristics : Wool and silk Dimensions : Height : 283cm ; Width : 546cm (Very good general condition, small restorations of maintenance) "Moses and the crossing of the red sea of the Hebrews Reynaud Levieux, French painter (1613 - 1694), from a protestant family, he went to Rome in 1640, worked on copies after Raphael and returned to Nîmes in 1644. Settled in Montpellier in 1649, he took part in the decoration of the Autheville mansion and executed tapestry cartoons on the theme of the Life of Moses. Then established in Avignon, he painted in 1651 a Holy Family for the Carthusian monks (collegiate church of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon); he painted the Purification of the Virgin (1654) for Notre Dame-des-Doms. In 1659, he joined the brotherhood of the Penitents Noirs, for which he painted a Deposition of Saint John the Baptist (Nîmes museum). He painted many pictures for the hotels and churches of Avignon, and also worked for the churches of Aix-en-Provence (Visitation, 1660, la Madeleine; Saint Bruno, 1665, Saint-Jean-de-Malte). In 1669, Levieux went to Rome again, from where he sent more paintings to Provence; he painted in Rome the Saint Denis and the miracle of the blind man (Rome, Saint-Louis-des-Français). He perhaps ended his life as a Carthusian monk. His art, of an austere classicism inherited from Raphael and of a real refinement in the careful workmanship and the sober colour ranges, has recently been brought back into the spotlight.
